The site-specific installation presented at Frieze London consists of an avalanche of around five hundred wooden crates. Cascading through the space, these reclaimed elements become a single architectural body, animated by the interplay of geometric patterns and openings within the wooden fabric. Explored through numerous iterations around the world, the motif takes on a particular resonance in London, where wooden crates evoke the city’s social and commercial history – from street markets to their use as improvised platforms at Speaker’s Corner in Hyde Park. Kawamata’s gesture transforms an ordinary object into a sculptural device that alters how we move through space, offering a temporary yet poignant stage for new discourse.
