TADASHI KAWAMATA

Models

Compared to the Maquettes — which, even when created as preparatory studies for a specific project, with clear references to the context and the development of the work, allow Kawamata a broader margin of creative freedom — the Models are more accurate and display a level of completeness and precision that we also find in the installations completed in situ, reflecting their structure and form to the point of evoking true architectural models.

Together with the archival photographs of each site-specific installation, the Models constitute a true documentation of temporary projects, inscribed in the continuous cycle of construction and destruction that has characterised Kawamata’s practice for more than 40 years.

Alongside the use of Models as a project-based tool, conceived to assist the artist in developing and presenting three-dimensionally his vision for future projects, Kawamata also produces Models that are not directly linked to a specific intervention. These works can be considered formal concretizations of the recurring themes in his practice, functioning as miniature versions of the key elements to which the artist continually returns in his in situ interventions, offering a privileged perspective on them.
